DESCRIPTION:November 13 – December 12\nReception for the artist: Saturday, November 13, 4 -6 pm.\nGallery Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 4pm & by appointment.\nAngels with Dirty Faces, 2021, 100 x 103 x 29 inches, various materials.\nHavisham #6, 2020, 63 x 38 x 2 inches\nPolyester mesh, & fabric, Mylar, vinyl, plastic garbage bags, staples, eyelets & T-pins on flattened paper lantern.\nFURNACE/Art on Paper Archive is pleased to present Angels with Dirty Faces, an exhibition of recent work by Gelah Penn. The exhibition’s title is inspired by the 1938 gangster film starring James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, directed by Michael Curtiz.\nIn this recent body of work, Penn continues to expand the language of drawing in sculptural space. Her show at FURNACE includes a wall-based installation and large-scale tondos from her Havisham series. Penn’s ambitious site-responsive works and mixed-media constructions have been exhibited widely. Using synthetic materials like polyester mesh, Mylar, plastic garbage bags, and colored staples, she examines substance, immateriality, and perceptual incident. Her interest in film and fiction informs the work. Most recently, Penn was included in The Stubborn Influence of Painting at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.\nfurnace-artonpaperarchive.com\n
