22-year-old East Canaan, CT, native Kayleigh Greene shares what it’s been like owning Industry Salon Studio, located in Canton, CT. The salon, which specializes in custom color and IBE extensions, opened a little over a year ago in April 2023.
How did you come up with your business’ name and branding?
I had a hard time coming up with a name that fit me. My boyfriend came up with a brilliant idea to call it “Industry,” as he owns the restaurant Industry Kitchen & Bar in Canaan, CT. We thought it would be great to carry on the name. At first, I wasn’t too fond of it. However, after designing a few logos, it grew on me! As for branding, I wanted something simple and modern to match the minimalist salon aesthetic. I think having too much going on in a work space can be overwhelming for your brain. Less is more in my opinion! The goal is to give the best hair possible with as few distractions as possible. Focusing on the client and not surrounding things is more of my priority.
What is your cosmetology background?
I had a passion for cosmetology from a young age. I decided to go to Oliver Wolcott Technical High School, a trade high school in Torrington, CT. Throughout school, I assisted a couple of stylists. I also took extra classes in the city to gain as much knowledge as possible, therefore helping me feel more confident in taking clients of my own. When I graduated high school, I obtained my cosmetology license. I was finally able to get clients of my own. With a lot of dedication, I was able to build my clientele pretty quickly.
What inspired you to start your business?
I needed a change in environment but was picky. I wanted to provide the best experience for my clients. My boyfriend actually had a wild idea to open a small luxury salon. I knew it would be risky and very hard. Fortunately, I had the right people supporting me.
Who were those people? And how’s it been going?
The most influential person, I would say, would have to be my boyfriend. I definitely would not have been able to do this without him. He encouraged me to start this business. He also built the entire space. He would go to the salon after working 12-hour days at the restaurant to get the salon built quickly. Not only did he do all that, but he also taught me all things business-related. I will forever be grateful for his support through all of this.
The first six months weren’t easy by any means. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears behind the scenes. I loved my salon, the environment, and working by myself. The second half of the year, it wasn’t just me anymore. I was blessed to have three amazing new stylists join the salon. It’s really nice having them working with me.
How have your plans changed since opening?
My plan at first was to just open a small little studio for myself with one chair. However, I realized it would probably get too lonely. It’s been great having more personalities in the shop!
What is one of the most important things you have learned?
Great things never come from your comfort zone. Even if something scares you, do it. Push yourself to be the best possible you. Trust your intuition! Most importantly, do what makes you happy. Every day is a new learning experience. I can’t say I know everything about owning a salon. That would be a lie! We’re all learning every day.
What was the most challenging thing about starting this business?
The building of the salon. It was a lot of physical work and long days, and it took a lot of money to make it perfect.
What was most fun?
I loved designing everything from my flooring to my color bowls; picking everything out was so exciting. Seeing it slowly all come together makes you appreciate it so much.
How has your business changed over time?
A lot more of us are working there now. It started out very quiet. Now, when we’re all there it’s not so quiet anymore. More people means more word-of-mouth. Because of that, the salon name really has gotten out there!
How do you balance running the business with the rest of your life?
Of course, with owning a business you need to have some boundaries so you don’t burn yourself out. My boundaries are not responding to messages for appointment requests on my weekends or on weekdays after 8pm. It can be overwhelming responding to several messages of people trying to get in. I’m lucky to have clients that respect that, too. I make sure to prioritize my well-being so I can be my best at work. Self-care is a must!
What did you wish you would have known before you started?
I wish I had known that some people won’t care to support you or congratulate you, and you’ll find out who your real friends are after opening a business.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
For anyone interested in going to a trade school, I highly recommend it. You can start your career at a really young age. And in most cases, you won’t have any debt! Having a trade job is something that will always be needed. If you love doing it, that’s even better.
