Since she was a child, Beverly Ditto always knew that she wanted to start an animal rescue. It was one of several interests she had and one of the goals she intended to accomplish, so nearly 20 years ago, she made it so. Beverly founded Collaborative Cats, a foster-based feline organization located in Ancramdale, NY, in 2016.

“I worked with other organizations such as Animal Kind first and when they had their fire years ago, they didn’t have enough space to continue taking in cats,” Beverly explained. “People knew I was doing this, so it was around that point where I began to think that maybe I could just do it myself. It slowly emerged over time.”

Originally from the Poconos in Pennsylvania, the 32-year-old discusses her Board and Train program, wherein Annie takes clients’ dogs into her home for a two-week training session and then shows owners how to maintain what their dogs have learned. 🐶🐾

28-year-old Tyler Lydon talks about his time in the NBA and how he’s brought his expertise home to work with students of all ages.

“I played basketball throughout high school, first at Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains, NY, and then at New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire for two years. From there, I was on a basketball scholarship at Syracuse University, where I played for two years. In 2017, I was drafted into the NBA to play for the Denver Nuggets. I left the NBA in part due to a couple of injuries, but also the pandemic hit when I became a free agent, so I decided it was a good time to leave and pursue other opportunities,” he said.

33-year-old Lucy SST started Top Secret Folder, a guide to local attractions, in early 2022. She had been working for a farm in Pine Plains, NY, where she encountered many visitors asking for restaurant and shop recommendations in the area. Upon discovering that no resource provided a comprehensive list of things to do in the immediate area, she realized that she could fill a vital niche.

When Lucy got the idea for Top Secret Folder, she envisioned it to be an online magazine of sorts. She had extensive experience managing an online events calendar and listings, and she wanted to create a directory with additional editorial pieces on the website. Originally, Top Secret Folder was a physical booklet that listed local restaurants separated into categories; the project has since grown to include a directory of farms, restaurants, CSAs, artisans, and more. In its current form, Top Secret Folder is an online, illustrated events calendar that lives primarily on Instagram and on the website.

28-year-old Kori Rimany’s business started with

28-year-old Kori Rimany’s business started with a tomato-scented candle. One of her close friends gifted her a tomato-vine candle, and when Kori attempted to purchase another, she discovered that the business had closed. When she fell short in finding an adequate replacement, she decided to try her hand at making one herself.

Her first candle, the Skiff Mountain Summer, is a blend of tomato vine and basil leaf and is named after the home where she was raised. “The scent reminds me of my mom’s garden in August,” Kori explained. In February of 2021, whilst Kori was teaching online, she decided to try selling her candles rather than just making them as a hobby, and the english teacher candle co., her small-batch soy candle business, was officially born.

Earlier this year, 24-year-old Eli Hill began Stone House Films, a video production company specializing in branded documentary, dance, and music. The Sharon, CT, native began working in freelance video and photography in the midst of studying at the University of Vermont, where he earned a BS in food systems and community development.

Indeed, while his current work seems like a departure from his educational background, Eli clarifies that his studies have greatly influenced the depth of his craft. “I’m incredibly happy and grateful to have studied something pertaining to the environment, community, and natural world as it continues to shape the ‘why’ behind my current work – a perspective that can sometimes be overshadowed by the ‘how’ of filmmaking.”

30-year-old Alexandra Occhicone and 31-year-old Arianna Milanese always wanted to open their own restaurant and bar, but the opportunity didn’t arise until the middle of 2022 when they found the perfect location for rent off of West Road in Pleasant Valley, NY. What followed was a seven-month process that included renovating and custom building the space, obtaining an LLC, and completing the oodles of paperwork that come along with starting a business, and on January 8, 2023, The Bar on West & Main officially opened its doors.

Starting a business in the midst of a global pandemic might not seem like a very economical (no pun intended) choice, but Sarah Jayne did exactly that. After the 27-year-old graduated from Marist College in 2020 with her degree in fashion merchandising, she was looking to open a boutique-style shop. She picked Red Hook as her location, as her mother, Rebecca, has worked as a nail technician in the village for many years and because of that, Sarah was incredibly familiar with and had quite a fondness for the area. “It’s been just my mom and me for my whole life. Seeing her be independent, a great business owner, and an inspiration motivated me to be who I am today. She inspired me to open my shop,” Sarah said.

33-year-old Elizabeth Vincent discusses making natural, gourmet dog treats, getting a small business off of the ground, and the dog that inspired it all.

“I own Percy’s Cookie Jar, a gourmet, all-natural, homemade dog treat business. I use limited ingredients to provide healthy treats that dog owners can feel good giving to their furry best friends. I started the business in 2015 after the loss of Percy,” she said. “Percy was my inspiration and always will be. I never got to bake treats for him, and I strongly believe that the food and treats he consumed contributed to his passing. After doing many, many hours of research, I am very picky as to what my current dog, Penelope, eats.”

Originally from France, Romane Recalde moved to Amenia, NY, with her husband in 2020. Romane grew up in the remote French countryside, near Bordeaux, but she never considered herself to be particularly outdoors-y. When she and her husband moved to Amenia, however, she found herself increasingly interested in gardening.

Fast-forward four years later, and Romane not only has a successful flower farm, but has also recently opened an accompanying flower shop located right in the heart of the village of Amenia. Romane never dreamed of having a storefront, and to be honest, she shared that she herself had “a lot of resistance to it.” She has a fondness for her freedom, independence, and ability to work as she pleases.
