Your name and type of camera you use / prefer?

Christina Georgiou / Panasonic LUMIX G7

What type of photography do you most often do or prefer (subject matter)?

Street photography / Portraits / Human Interest

How did you get into photography?

I’ve been into photography literally since I was a kid. When I was seven, I was volunteering at a nursing home and they were doing a Secret Santa. A nice old man gave me his present…. a digital camera! I was obsessed with that thing! I took it everywhere.

I didn’t get my first actual camera (my Lumix G7) until my sophomore year of college. Originally it was for video…my argument was that I was a film major who was tired of checking out equipment, and I needed something to grow with.

When I studied abroad that same year, I brought the camera with me and started experimenting with architecture photography. But what I really loved was capturing different people during my travels. That’s when I got good at photography. I took that thing on every trip and it was the perfect way to experiment.

What’s your most favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

I can’t think of a specific one. I’m attached to a lot of my photos. Anything that captures someone’s soul, a certain emotion, or a moment in time…that’s what I strive for.

What inspires you and your photography?

What inspires me about photography is that, in my opinion, it’s the closest thing to time travel. You freeze a moment with the click of a shutter. You can memorialize a person. We’re only this young once, only feeling these specific feelings once, only thinking these specific thoughts once.

It’s also really therapeutic. With street photography, walking around teaches you to be present and notice the minor details…to see the beauty in what people ignore. It’s also a great way to document truth, which I love.

What is your background – did you study photography or are you self-taught?

I’m self taught. I learned mostly by experimenting on my own as a hobby and through different internships and jobs, learning as I went and really training myself.

Technology, like YouTube and social media, has been a huge help because of all the tutorials available online, as well as inspiration from other photographers. I do find editing and color grading fun, but I’m not that advanced.

Where do you photograph? What are your most common locations? Do you have a favorite place to photograph either as a subject matter or as a background?

On the streets of New York City, mostly. I walk for hours, really going wherever. I frequent Washington Square Park because that’s where the most characters are. But ultimately, it’s not about the location, it’s about the people in it.

How do people find you and your photos – do you sell your photos or are you more “to hire” / commission-based?

You can find my photos on Instagram @christinaggeorgiou.

Have you (your photos) won any awards?

I don’t enter my photos in any competitions, but I am an Emmy Award-winning video editor!
