“Sherri and I love all of the pretty things that make a house a home – a great scented candle, a gorgeous coffee table book, a charming tablecloth – and we found that there wasn’t anything like that in Chatham,” Melissa Davis said of the inspiration to open her new shop with Sherri Marton in Chatham, NY. The shop, Marton & Davis, officially opened its doors on June 26.

Melissa has had a long career as a fashion editor and publicist, while Sherri has worked her entire career in real estate. They first met while serving on the board for the Columbia County Historical Society, and following Melissa’s success with her shop, Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House in Kinderhook, NY, Melissa and Sherri decided to join together and create a shop that mimicked their own personal tastes.

Stocking local goods on the shelves

“Our shop stocks pretty things for your home, our favorite bath & body products, enticing candies – we have a special Swedish candy collection called Marton & Davis sweets! – and garden accessories,” Melissa shares. “And, it’s a great place to find a gift!”

One of the things Melissa and Sherri are most looking forward to is partnering with local makers and brands. They will be carrying products from The Quiet Botanist, a dried flower shop based in Hudson, NY; My Neighbor’s Tallow, a hand-crafted regenerative skincare brand based in Hudson, NY; Bloomist, a nature-inspired home decor brand; and Tu Et Al, handmade soap and skincare based in the Catskill Mountains. Additionally, Sherri and Melissa are thrilled to be the exclusive stockists of Kinrove, a small-batch fragrance company based out of Coxsackie, NY.

“Everything we sell is something we truly love – it’s all of our favorites and we hope that our customers find lots of products that they have never seen before,” Melissa says.

Serving their home community

The location in Chatham wasn’t just serendipity, it was intentional. Melissa lives in the village – the shop is a mere five minute walk from her house! – and Sherri has had a home in northern Hillsdale for the past 13 years.

“When our kids were young, we used to buy their back-to-school shoes at Brown’s, which formerly occupied the Marton & Davis space,” Sherri recalls. “We are also huge fans of the Crandell Theater and are so excited for their reopening this fall. I am so happy to be involved in the village in a more meaningful way.”

Melissa and Sherri know that online shopping is so convenient and prevalent in today’s world, so they strived to make shopping at Marton & Davis a full experience for their customers. “We are excited to carry some of our long-time favorites like John Derian, Bordallo Pinheiro, Mary Maguire Art, and John Robshaw in an area where they are hard to find,” Melissa says. “Marton & Davis also stocks a smattering of the loveliest antiques!”

In the coming weeks and months, Melissa and Sherri are looking forward to stocking exclusive merchandise and will be bringing in more goods that are special to Marton & Davis in the near future. Keep your eye on the event calendar as well, as Marton & Davis plans to host events in the near future.

Marton & Davis is located at 33 Main Street, Chatham, NY and is open Thursday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm and on Sundays from 11am to 5pm. Keep up with them on Instagram @martonanddavis and on Facebook at Marton & Davis
