By Published On: October 31st, 2025

In honor of Photographer Appreciation Month in October, we’re highlighting some of our local photographers. Get to know more about Steven Howard Photography below!

Your name and type of camera you use / prefer?

Steven Howard / Sony a7R 3

What type of photography do you most often do or prefer (subject matter)?

I prefer landscapes and portraits.

How did you get into photography?

I originally got into photography when I went to college for computer science. I took it as an elective and I loved it, so I ran with it.

What’s your most favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

My favorite photo I’ve ever taken was one with two mirrors and the subject. It was like three photos in one and there was the mirror edge in the middle, so I called it duality.

What inspires you and your photography?

The love for photography in general inspires me. I always have my camera on me.

What is your background – did you study photography or are you self-taught?

I am all self taught with help from my mother who also did photography, but more on a hobby level. I come for a culinary background.
Has technology impacted your artistry and photos?
Yes and no. A robot or AI will ever be in real life taking photos like humans do, but yes, it has helped with editing high-grain / noise photos.

Where do you photograph? What are your most common locations? Do you have a favorite place to photograph either as a subject matter or as a background?

My favorite place to take photos is at Poets’ Walk Park in the Red Hook area. The sunsets there are amazing. I usually wait until a storm passes through and I make my way there to grab photos of it. I mainly photograph in Poughkeepsie though at the walkway or waterfront.

How do people find you and your photos – do you sell your photos or are you more “to hire” / commission-based?

You can find my photos on Instagram @stevenshphotos. I would love to sell my photos, but I almost always do commission-based work.
