Pine Plains voters approve $12.9 million capital project
On Wednesday, October 15, voters in the Pine Plains Central School District approved a $12.0 million capital project proposal. The project includes a variety of necessary health and safety improvements in the school district’s buildings, as well as improvements to athletics fields and the courtyard at Stissing Mountain Jr/Sr High School.
“Addressing aging infrastructure is critical to ensure the health and safety of students, faculty, and community members,” the district wrote in the project proposal.
Updates are slated to take place across multiple buildings within the district. Some of the proposed improvements at Stissing Mountain Jr/Sr High School includes roof and elevator replacements, gymnasium floor replacement, resurfacing of the track, tennis court replacement, and construction of new concessions building with bathrooms.
Also at Stissing Mountain are improvements to the existing courtyard, which the district says is “underutilized and outdated.” The project would create a more functional space with outdoor lighting, furniture, awnings, and concrete walkways to support future outdoor classroom use, host events, and provide an additional space where students can socialize.
At Seymour Smith Intermediate Learning Center, the improvements are aimed at masonry restoration.
As far as funding the project goes, the district will apply $9.1 million from the district’s capital reserve fund, while the remaining $3.8 million will be financed through bonds and repaid using State Building Aid funds.
The measure passed 200-58 votes, according to the results released by the district.
“I would like to thank the Pine Plains voters for their continued support,” said Brian Timm, the Superintendent for the Pine Plains Central School District. “With the improvements in this capital project, specifically the improvements to the athletic fields, the new concession stand and the courtyard, it is our hope to continue to strengthen the community’s connection with our schools.”
