Restaurant Review
Trotwood Restaurant at the Glen Falls House
Last week, Lindsey and I decided to travel across the river to visit the Glen Falls House in Round Top, NY. It had been a minute since I had been over to Greene County, and I can honestly say that I forgot just how beautiful the Catskill Mountains are. I had heard about the Glen Falls House, but had never visited the hotel or its restaurant, Trotwood.
So, on Thursday afternoon last week, Lindsey and I headed over the Rip Van Winkle in the drizzle to have dinner at Trotwood Restaurant.
Upon first entrance, the restaurant and hotel both have a cabin-y, cozy vibe. The dining room had wood paneling, with large windows along one wall and a slightly separate lounge area decked out with comfortable leather couches. The dining room is furnished with big wood tables and chairs, with candles on each table and dried vines hanging from the ceiling. The whole setting was very earthy and woodsy, and definitely reminded us that we were in the Catskill Mountains.
About the food
The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and they noted that Thursday evening was the calm before the storm of a very upcoming busy weekend. Most weekends in the summer, the Glen Falls House hosts a variety of different events on weekends, including DJs and other musical performances.
We perused the menu, which had a handful of starters, an assortment of main dishes, a few burgers, and a variety of side options. Starter choices ranged from the classic caesar salad with a twist, featuring chiffonade mixed kale, collards, and tossed with Trotwood’s housemade lemony anchovy parmesan dressing, as well as more unique options such as the Smokey Mountain Pate or the beet carpaccio.
For mains, they had Indian head risotto, summer lemon pasta, tuna steak, Rip’s steak plate, and shrimp and grits. While all of these sounded absolutely delicious, Lindsey and I decided that we were really in the mood to have burgers. In addition to the burgers we ordered, they also had a lamb burger with cranberry chutney and goat cheese on the menu, which sounded yummy, but we chose the other two options instead.
She went with the Kaaterskill, which is two four ounce smashburgers, garlic aioli, cheddar cheese, pickled red onion, and greens on a grilled bun. I chose the vegan, which is a black bean mushroom burger, chipotle, heavy metal sauce, pickled red onion, and greens on a toasted bun. Both came served with perfectly django seasoned, crispy fries and a side of chipotle mayo.
Even though I’m not vegan or even vegetarian, I do love a good veggie burger. One of the most common problems I encounter, however, is that they fall apart as soon as you take a bite. The burger from Trotwood was perfectly crispy around the edges and even had a nice crunch when I bit into it. I can say with certainty that it was definitely the best veggie burger I’ve ever had!
Lindsey recently got back into eating beef and she said that this burger in particular made her very grateful that she did! It was incredibly flavorful and was complemented nicely by the fries.
Overall, we left very happy with our meal and with the dish options. The atmosphere was very cozy, the ambiance warm, the staff friendly, and the food absolutely delicious. If you find yourself in the Catskills, we recommend you make a stop at Trotwood Restaurant in the Glen Falls House!
