Where to Get Your Christmas Tree

I know it seems like it’s too early to be talking about where to get a Christmas tree – it’s only November, after all! – but with more and more folks decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving comes around, the Christmas tree farms have been selling out and closing for the season earlier each year. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best local spots to grab your Christmas tree in NY, CT, + MA. 

Battenfeld Christmas Tree Farm
856 Route 199, Red Hook, NY 

A longtime local staple, the Battenfeld Christmas Tree Farm in Red Hook will be opening on Monday, November 25. The farm will close for Thanksgiving, but reopen on November 29 and remain open through mid-December. Battenfeld’s offers six tree species – Douglas Fir, White Pine, Spruce, Balsam Fir, Concolor Fir, and Frasier Fir. Handsaws are available at the entrance to the farm for a $10 rental fee or $15 purchase. Tree carts are available at the bailing barn and throughout the property.

Barry Farm LLC
195 Mansfield Road, Harwinton, CT 

Owned by the Barry family, visit Barry Farm to choose and cut your own Christmas tree, or pick from their fresh-cut Canadian Balsams. Additionally, they always have plenty of hand-made holiday wreaths and centerpieces for sale. Their Christmas store features products from local artisans, including soaps, foods, ceramics, and more. 

Crane Hill Tree Farm
233 Johnson Hill Road, Washington, MA 

Crane Hill Tree Farm in Washington, MA, will open on November 29 and they expect to stay open until December 15, but continue to check their website for updates. Crane Hill is owned and operated by the Spencer family, who planted their first trees in 1989 and opened for business in 1997. Now, they have approximately 4,500 trees and the primary species is the traditional New England Christmas tree, the Balsam Fir.

Homegrown Farms
97 Old New Hartford Road, Pleasant Valley, CT 

Established in 1978, Homegrown Farms encompasses ten acres and has been serving the community with locally grown Christmas trees for nearly five decades. Hours of operation are 10am-4pm on Fridays and Sundays, and 9am-4pm on Saturdays.

Lappala Christmas Tree Farm
2 Upland Road, New Milford, CT 

Tom and Cindy Lappala have been growing Christmas trees for more than 30 years. Tom, an arborist and plant health care worker, began growing Christmas trees while working full-time. Now, Tom and Cindy spend most summer weekends planting, pruning, mowing, and taking care of the trees. Lappala Christmas Tree Farm offers Blue and White Spruce, and the farm’s land is a part of the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy. 

Murphy Crest Christmas Tree Farm
170 Depot Hill Road, Amenia, NY

Head over to Murphy Crest Christmas Tree Farm in Amenia, NY, to get your Christmas tree this year – just make sure you get there early! They sold out by December 3 last year! Offering Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir, Canaan Fir, and Norway Spruce, this family-owned farm also has wreaths and tree stands available to purchase. Hand saws and carts are both available to use, or have their friendly staff help you with cutting your tree. 

Primrose Hill Farm
203 Fiddlers Bridge Road, Staatsburg, NY 

Primrose Hill Farm is a historic farm owned by the Cookingham and Schoch families for eight generations. Located close to Route 9G, Primrose Hill Farm offers a variety of trees to choose from. 

Saltsman Christmas Tree Farm
214 NY-308, Rhinebeck, NY 

Located just one mile east of the traffic light in the Village of Rhinebeck, Saltsman Christmas Tree Farm offers pre-cut Balsam Fir, Canaan Fir, Concolor Fir, and Douglas Fir, and choose and cut Blue Spruce, White Spruce, and Fraser Fir. Saltsman Christmas Tree Farm will open the day after Thanksgiving and will be open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The last entry to the farm is 3:45pm in order to give you enough time to choose a tree prior to closing at 4pm. Once they sell out of all trees, they will be closed for the season. 

Seekonk Farm
49 Seekonk Road, Great Barrington, MA 

Cut-your-own tree experience is open at Seekonk Farm in Great Barrington! The last day to cut a tree will be December 16. Seekonk Farm provides saws, carts, and twine with helpers to secure your tree to your car. Once you find your tree, bring it to the processing area where they will shake it to remove debris and dried needles, drill a hole in the bottom upon request, and bail it for easy transport and set up. If you don’t want to pick out your own tree, you can find your perfect tree from their selection of pre-cut trees available at all lots. While you’re there, pay a visit to their Christmas Shop, which is fully stocked with everything you need for the holidays including wreaths, centerpieces, tree toppers, ornaments, gifts, and more. 

Wonderland Farm
191 White Schoolhouse Road, Rhinebeck, NY 

Located in Rhinebeck, NY, the Lobotsky Family has offered a cut-your-own Christmas tree experience for over 30 years. Opening weekend is November 23 + 24, with the farm continuing to be open Friday through Sundays on weekends until they are sold out.
