Furnace – Art on Paper presents Kim Schmidt Fine Art

By Published On: July 26th, 2024

We all love a pop-up, and this show is well worth browsing both the wall and flat files. Art dealer Kim Schmidt has taken over Furnace – Art on Paper, curating a salon-style show of works on paper with a large bandwidth. Schmidt is more often showing at art fairs, so seeing these works in the Northwest Corner is a treat, not to be missed.

A small Howard Hodgkin, one of my early influences, sits alongside a Richard Diebenkorn print; it is joyous to see both in person. Multiple works reflect a plethora of processes: charcoal, fabric, and oil paint are in conversation with delicate cut paper pieces, prints and detailed drawings, all with the common thread of paper. This ubiquitous material has been a key player for artists and their practice for centuries, not only for its accessibility, but also for its multiple textures and malleability.

Works are on display are featured from artists including Tania Alvarez, Alice Aycock, Louise Belcourt, Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, Stacey Davidson, Richard Diebenkorn, Leslie Dill, Richard Estes, Kiki Smith, Valerie Hammond, Anne Lindberg, Kathy Moss, Jean Pagliuso, Cate Pasquarelli, Sandy Skoglund, Clive Smith, Pat Steir, Eve Biddle, Sara Nesbitt, and Wayne Thiebaud.

Furnace – Art on Paper is located at 107 Main Street, Falls Village, CT. It is open Saturdays and by appointment (917) 742-6456, and Kim Schmidt’s fine art will be on display from July 13th – August 10th, 2024.

On Saturday, July 28th, artist Valerie Hammond will be conversing with journalist and culture writer Laura Van Straaten from 2 p.m. RSVP to (917) 742-6456 or kimschmidtart@gmail.com, as space will be limited!
