Welcome summer – officially! And it looks like we may even have sunshine this weekend. To celebrate, how about this super-easy summertime favorite of the Spanish, a tinto de verano, which literally translates to summer red wine. It’s red wine poured over ice and topped with lemon soda and, if you want, a slice of orange or lemon. Not only is it oh-so-easy to make, it tastes great, is low in alcohol, and is very refreshing and food-friendly. Muy bien! Since you’re mixing the wine with soda (use 7Up or Sprite), choose an everyday red wine. Be sure it’s Spanish! An excellent choice is the Bodegas Borsao Garnacha. It’s dry but fruity. Fill a glass with ice, pour about a half cup of wine in it, and top with an equal amount of soda. Stir gently and add a slice of fruit if desired. Find a comfortable chair, bring along a bowl of nuts, and say “OLE” to summer.
