I’m hanging on to summer as long as I can, and white wines help me stay in a summer frame of mind. The other night I opened a bottle of Hermann J. Wiemer Field, a white wine blend from this iconic Finger Lakes winery on the shores of Seneca Lake. Wiemer was a pioneer in the Finger Lakes, one of the first to identify its potential for producing grapes that could make exceptional wines. He succeeded in so many ways, and the winery’s commitment to quality shines through everything they do. The Field is a blend of young-vine Gruner Veltliner with their staples, Riesling and Chardonnay. On the nose are notes of citrus and some honey. On the palate, the wine is lovely and light and layered with so many flavors! There’s lime and gooseberry and green apple and peach and a hint of melon. It’s balanced and refreshing and just plain delicious. The name itself – Field – begs for the wine to be enjoyed on a blanket on a hill overlooking a meadow. Go for it.
