Photographer Appreciation Month: Ashlea Tamburrino

By Published On: October 17th, 2023

In honor of Photographer Appreciation Month in October, we’re highlighting some of our local photographers. For this installment, we’re featuring Ashlea Tamburrino. Read on to learn about her photography!

Your name and type of camera you use / prefer?

Ashlea Tamburrino. I use a Canon Mark IV.

What type of photography do you most often do or prefer (subject matter)?

I dabble in a lot of different types of photography, but I mainly do portrait photography. My favorite types of photography are sports photography and styled portrait sessions.

How did you get into photography?

My mum always had her camera and took photos of myself and my brothers when we were young. I received a 35mm film camera for Christmas one year and I always had it with me snapping photos of everyone. As I got older, the artsy side of me decided to get more serious about photography.

What’s your most favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

This is a tough question. I don’t think I have one photo that stands out as my favorite.

What inspires you and your photography?

My children inspire my photography. I want families to be able to have the memories of their children each year, or be able to give them images of their children they will cherish from special events or moments.

What is your background – did you study photography or are you self-taught?

I am completely self taught, the internet is a wonderful thing in helping learning photography and keeping up to date with new processes and technology.

What is your process?

When a client books a session we discuss the date and time of the session and what they are looking to get out of the session. When the session day arrives, I arrive about 10-15 minutes before to set up gear/lighting and to scout locations to take photos. Sessions can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours and longer depending on the session you have chosen. Once the session is completed, I upload the images and edit. Once final images have been selected, I then fine tune images and remove blemishes. I will then send the final images via a link through email where a client can download images. I do also offer packages with prints so if prints have been ordered I will place that order.

Do you use Photoshop or other software or are your photos more natural?

I use Lightroom and Photoshop. I will do minor adjustments to my photos for lighting and use Photoshop to fine tune portraits and remove unwanted blemishes, but I try to keep my images as natural as I can.

How has technology impacted your artistry and photos?

Technology is a wonderful thing and I think it can add elements to photos and take an image to the next level. Technology is always improving, so I feel there is always room for improvement with how I capture and edit my photos.

Where do you photograph – your most common locations – do you have a favorite place to photograph either as a subject matter or as a background?

There are so many beautiful locations in the Hudson Valley. Some of my favorite locations are Stissing Pond, Buttercup Sanctuary, and Poets’ Walk Park.

How do you market yourself – do you have a website or social media that you use to promote your photography?

I have a website, Facebook page, and Instagram page.

Have you (your photos) won any awards?

I have not won any awards, but I think someone looking at one of my images and giving great feedback is an award in itself.
