Photographer Appreciation Month: Olivia (Libby) Valentine

By Published On: October 12th, 2023

In honor of Photographer Appreciation Month in October, we’re highlighting some of our local photographers. For this installment, we’re featuring our own Libby Valentine. Read on to learn about her photography!

Your name and the type of camera you use / prefer?

Olivia Valentine and I shoot with a Nikon d7500. Someday I’d like to own a full frame camera.

What type of photography do you most often do or prefer (subject matter)?

It is hard for me to narrow down what I like to shoot.  I love getting out in the great outdoors in all seasons. Winter, spring, summer and fall, I love them all! I also enjoy cooking and taking pictures of what I create. I have shot a few weddings, but realize that I am definitely not cut out for it. Posing people is not my forte. I lose sleep for weeks before the big day! Too much stress!

How did you get into photography?

I think my love for photography began when I was about 10. I would watch my brother, Bruce, develop his film in a closet in our house. When I had kids of my own, I enjoyed sending out Photo Christmas cards. They were so well received that friends began asking me to take pictures of their kids. This was before social media! My kids would always grumble and complain when it was time for the annual Christmas photo. But, once they saw what was created, they were always quite happy with the result!

What’s your most favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

My most favorite photo? That’s a tough question. Photos I took of my kids I’d have to say. They grew up so quickly! I have thousands and thousands of pictures of them! One of these days I plan on putting them all in albums!

What inspires you and your photography?

I’m inspired by the beauty that surrounds us. Someone once said to me, “there’s no shortage of pretty.” Such a true statement.

What is your background – did you study photography or are you self-taught?

I am self taught and still learning with every click.

Do you use Photoshop or other software or are your photos more natural?

I use Lightroom to edit my photos. Someday I’d like to learn Photoshop.

How has technology impacted your artistry and photos?

When I used to shoot film, I would literally  be driving to the camera store with my camera rewinding the film on the drive there. I couldn’t wait to see what I had captured. The wait was torture! Now, there is no waiting! However, after a shoot, I’m racing home to upload the photos onto my computer!

Where do you photograph – your most common locations – do you have a favorite place to photograph either as a subject matter or as a background?

I’d have to say I photograph mostly in The Hudson Valley. We are so fortunate to live where we live.

How do you market yourself – do you have a website or social media that you use to promote your photography?

I don’t have a website. I’m constantly asked if I do. I post my pictures on instagram and Facebook.

How do people find you and your photos – do you sell your photos or are you more “for hire” / commission-based?

A lot of my pictures are seen right here at Main Street Magazine, whom I’m beyond thankful for. ♥️

Have you (your photos) won any awards?

Nope, no awards! Unless you count photo contests on the various social media groups I belong to.

I’d like to add that photography is a passion of mine. I thoroughly enjoy being outside with my camera in nature. It is a major stress reliever for me and if I go just a few days without my camera on my shoulder I start to go a little bonkers !
