In 1955 Ella Merle and her daughter Dede Kline rose to an auspicious challenge of helping animals who had fallen through the cracks of society in Columbia County. Through their dedication and exhaustive efforts, one small building with five dog kennels has today become a multi-faceted animal welfare organization holding up to sixty dogs and one hundred cats.
Over the last six decades CGHS/SPCA has expanded its services in the community to include low-cost veterinary services (serving more than two thousand animals each year); a food bank (providing 25,000 pounds of free food annually to families in need); stray dog housing, assisting law enforcement with cruelty cases; community outreach; and humane education.

Meet Thor – your loyal, sun-loving, gentle giant. Thor is a 2-year-old Akbash with a heart as big as his 110-pound frame. This sweet boy is searching for a very special home, one where he can be the only pet, but also where he’ll never be short on love and sunshine. Thor has two great passions in life: people and soaking up the sun. Whether he’s lounging in the yard or snuggling up for some affection, he’s happiest when he’s close to his humans. Despite his size, Thor is the definition of a gentle giant, calm, affectionate, and incredibly loyal. He’d do well in a home with older kids who can match his mellow energy and give him all the love he deserves. And while he needs to be the only animal in the home, his affection is more than enough to fill your heart (and your couch).
