The Winter Olympics will be ending this weekend. I have so enjoyed watching them and getting glimpses of Italy. What better way to raise a toast to the Italian hosting of the games than with an Italian wine? Better yet, how about a wine from a wine region close to Milan, which would be Piedmont. For a red that would be a Langhe, and for a white, a Roero. Both are fun, expressive wines. Langhe is made with the grape Nebbiolo, and is beautiful in the way that a Pinot Noir can be – bright red fruit notes in a light-bodied wine that has lots of layers. Roero is where the grape Arneis is grown, and it yields a bright, clean white with a lovely mineral note. They can be tricky to find so be sure to ask at your favorite wine store. One of my favorite producers is G.D. Vajra; their Langhe Nebbiolo is multo bene! Alla Salute Cortina Milano 2026!
