Troutbeck is pleased to present “Florescence””, a solo show by Alexis England curated by John-Paul Phillipe.

“This new series is an affair with color and a departure from my restrained ‘mono palette’ – it’s loud, slightly psychotic and unapologetically pretty.” – Alexis England

“There is no improvement on nature; I can only honor and revel in it. The natural world gives me all the inspiration I need, a springboard, it can be as simple as the structure of a bloom or a claw, from there it’s spontaneous and I’m off through some kind of portal… it’s improv, riffing, so much like singing really. As much as I begin unrestrained, there is a constant return to detail, to complete mindfulness of balance and gesture, a process that begins with abandon but concludes with sober calculated decisions.
In this new series colour is all important. There are colours I want-need- to see next to each other.”
– Alexis England

Wavering between her talents in both art and music, England enrolled in the York Academy of Arts at 17. As music quickly began to demand more of her time, she dedicated the first chapter of her artistic life to her voice, moving to Los Angeles where she rose to the top of her field performing and recording with Stevie Wonder, Mavis Stables, and Sergio Mendez, to name a few. Returning East and to her art, she briefly attended the Art Students League in New York City subsequently establishing a studio in her preferred environment of upstate New York. There she works simultaneously on what she calls her “straight gig” – coveted animal portraits – and her “personal” work, nature-based expressive paintings that hover between abstraction and familiar form.

The show runs from May 5 – June 6, 2023

Opening Reception: Friday, May 5th, 5pm – 7pm
