Bodegas Borsao Garnacha

Welcome summer – officially! And it looks like we may even have sunshine this weekend. To celebrate, how about this super-easy summertime favorite of the Spanish, a tinto de verano, which literally translates to summer red wine. It’s red wine poured over ice and topped with lemon soda and, if […]

Whitecliff Gamay Noir

With the Belmont Stakes at the Saratoga Racetrack on Saturday, it seems fitting to celebrate with a New York wine. I had the opportunity to taste several wines from Whitecliff Vineyard recently. With tasting rooms – and vineyards – in both Gardiner (their home base) and Hudson (just off the […]

Seaglass Pinot Noir

Summer, where are you? Memorial Day was beautiful, but now there’s more rain in the forecast. Alas. Luckily there are lots of wines to make any situation more cheerful and, in this case, summery. For this weekend, how about the Seaglass Pinot Noir? Pinot is a wine that goes well with just […]

Erath Pinot Noir

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. It’s light until after 8 now, and the patio beckons. A wine you’ll always want to have on hand when it’s time for food off the grill is a light and lovely red with bright fruit notes, but plenty of juicy acidity. It’s […]

Freixenet Cordon Negro Cocktail

For those of us who will be tuning in to watch the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, we can feel that much more a part of the scene with a Black-Eyed Susan in our glass. That’s the official cocktail of the Preakness, a drink that reflects that beautiful flower that’s in bloom all over […]

Friends, not frights: In the year of the snake, take kindly to this special animal

It’s the Year of the Snake, and we should all be paying more attention to these amazing creatures not just for what they represent, but for what they do.

Snakes, like spiders and bats, tend to subconsciously initiate the fight-or-flight instinct in us. “Get rid of it!” tends to be our reaction to seeing any […]

Strawberry & Grapes XXL Moscato

A line of XXL Moscatos has hit the market by storm, and it’s easy to understand why. The wines combine the delicious sweetness of a moscato with a fresh fruit flavor AND an “xxl” ABV. I’m talking a high alcohol by volume – 16%. This wine calls itself “Moscato Without Manners.” And what […]

Rombauer Chard

Something about the rise in temperatures and seeing daffodils makes me want to indulge in a big, lucious, sunshine-y Chardonnay. I had one the other day that really knocked my socks off. It’s the 2023 Rombauer Chard. I’m always skeptical of wines over $40 – are they that good? – but this wine made […]
